It was an honour to be involved with the first ever ‘Celebrating Homecare’, a day commemorating the excellent work taking place within the home care sector. 22nd September paid tribute to the fantastic individuals who make it possible for people to stay at home if they require care. The support we received from home care companies, famous faces and even a politician was simply breathtaking.
Run by the Homecare Association, in conjunction with the Care Workers’ Charity, it was the very first awareness day dedicated to the sector. We developed the theme for the campaign, #MadeWithCare, which encouraged home careworkers to be creative and ‘make’ something with clients. It’s safe to say that their imaginations ran wild! We saw a range of creations, from knitted scarves to delicious cakes. There was no better way to show the bond that develops between home careworkers and clients.
It wasn’t just the smiling faces of home careworkers and clients that shone the light on home care. We also unveiled research showing how the pandemic has shaped public perception of the sector. The survey found that over a third (35%) of people are now more likely to choose care in their own home compared to pre-pandemic. Let’s hope that this upward trends continues, and that we consider home care in the first instance when we or are loved ones need support.
A range of famous faces pledged their support, giving their own personal thank you to home careworkers in video messages. TV legend Esther Rantzen, sportsman Colin Jackson, TV presenter and fashion guru Gok Wan and the cast of Emmerdale showed their appreciation for the sector.
And we even saw some support from Number 10! Health secretary Sajid Javid thanked home careworkers in a tweet. We were delighted to see Javid give reassurance that social care continues to be a priority for the Government. Just as we intended, #CelebratingHomecare got people talking about an important issue.
With the success of #CelebratingHomecare 2021 behind us, we can’t wait for next year’s festivities. Hopefully, just as much excitement and creativity will be on the cards!
